JEWELL - Dan Brodie insists that getting a win - any win - was more important than beating his former team. But the Hawks' head coach had his cake and he got to eat it too here last night.
South Hamilton's wrestlers put a smile on their coach's face with a 52-18 whipping of Roland-Story on the strength of five wins that included bonus points, four coming by fall. Brodie is a graduate of Roland-Story and a former state qualifier for the Norsemen.
"It was nice to win in front of the home crowd more than anything," Brodie said. "We came out and wrestled really hard."
Earlier in the night, Gilbert handed South Hamilton a 48-15 setback in a Heart of Iowa Conference triangular meet.
Austin Roys (126 pounds), Sam Waid (160), Chris Jacobson (170) and Cody Thompson (195) all ended their matches early via falls in the rout of Roland-Story. JD Rader (113) was the only Hawk grappler that needed 6 minutes, but he had no trouble in dispensing of Parker Witthuhn by major decision, 10-0.
South Hamilton also picked up forfeit wins from Jordan Toillion (120), Max Reiter (138) and Jacob Haugland (152).
Rader, Toillion, Reiter and Haugland were all victorious for South Hamilton against Gilbert.
Reiter stuck Austin Dunn in 3:36, while his teammates were all winners by decision. Haugland came out on the winning end of a wild 11-10 decision over Jake Rhoads, the son of Iowa State football coach Paul Rhoads. Rader topped the other Rhoads, Wyatt, in the Tigers' lineup, 4-1.
South Hamilton will now get set to take part in the HOIC tournament on Saturday in Story City. Wrestling will get underway at 10 a.m. inside the Roland-Story High School gymnasium.
