WEBSTER CITY - Trey Seiser is used to being a big fish in a little pond, but the script has now been flipped on the 2010 Northeast Hamilton graduate.

Standing 6-foot-5 and tipping the scales at more than 200 pounds, Seiser oftentimes looked like a man among boys on the 8-man prep gridiron for the Trojans. His size and skills helped him land a bevy of all-state accolades and ultimately put him on his current path.

Seiser recently was offered preferred walk-on status at Iowa State - he's one of just a handful of players to land one of the spots - and he's currently working out with the Cyclones as a member of their 105-man roster as head coach Paul Rhoads and company prepare for the season opener on Sept. 2 against Northern Illinois.

"Trey's very excited about everything right now," John Seiser, Trey's dad and prep football coach at Northeast Hamilton, said. "He really likes all of the coaches at Iowa State and they did a great job with him during the recruiting process. He realizes that there are things he has to improve on, but I think he's ready for the challenge."

Expected to redshirt this season, Seiser will look to jump into the mix at tight end in the upcoming years. He already has the speed that the coaches are looking for, now he just needs to add some extra bulk.

"Right now the biggest focus is putting on extra weight, and there's no doubt that the coaches think he's going to be able to put on a lot of weight because of his athletic ability and frame," John Seiser said. "So they're going to work on packing whatever (weight) they can on him this year, and I think he's probably already put on somewhere around 15 pounds."

Trey was a two-time all-state award winner from the Iowa Newspaper Association. He collected first-team status as a defensive lineman following his senior season last fall, and in 2008 he was a third-team pick as a tight end.

He caught 55 balls for 762 yards and 10 touchdowns during his junior campaign. As a senior he faced double- and sometimes triple-teams whenever he went down the field, but he still managed to snag 27 catches for 478 yards and six TDs.

On defense he amassed 126 tackles, including 22 for a loss, over his final two seasons in a Northeast Hamilton uniform.

Yes, it's a big leap from 8-man football to the Big 12, but John Seiser says his son is ready to do whatever it takes to make a contribution to the Cyclones.

"He's the type of kid that's going to work and do whatever it takes to get on the field. He's not content to just be on the team," he said. "And from talking to the coaches, it sounds like he's done very well this summer."

Trey has been enrolled at Iowa State since the summer session began and has been working out with the team since he landed in Ames. He plans to major in engineering.
