BASEBALL: Lynx give up big lead, but survive on Hibbing single against Lions

POSTED: July 2, 2009

CLEAR LAKE In front by seven runs before Clear Lake even came to the plate, everything seemed to be working in Webster City's favor here Wednesday night.

But there was a lot of game left to be played.

Slowly but surely the Lions got back into contention and thanks to seven Webster City errors managed to tie the contest at 10 heading into the seventh and final inning.

But Lynx senior Kyle Hibbing wasn't about to let his team surrender the victory, as he came through with a clutch one-out single to center field to score pinch-runner John Hill in the top of the seventh to lift Webster City to a wild 11-10 victory over the Lions in a North Central Conference contest.

"We came out ready to play and ready to hit, but we kind of let up and were sloppy on defense," Webster City head coach Matt Zoske said after his club improved to 16-9 overall and 10-4 in the NCC. "But when (Clear Lake) tied it in the sixth we could have just let them have it, but our guys wanted it and they went out and got it."

Nate Yanda was hit by a pitch to lead-off the seventh before handing the job over to Hill, who stole second and then moved to third on a wild pitch. He was able to trot home on Hibbing's single his third of the night.

Alex Davis came on in relief of Brent Nelson in the sixth and kept the Lions from taking the lead. He worked a scoreless seventh to secure the win.

Nelson was haunted by his defense throughout the contest, as only two of the 10 runs scored by Clear Lake were earned.

Daniel Stoakes, Branden Roberts and Nate Treibel all had two hits at the bottom of the Lynx lineup. Treibel collected two RBIs. Nelson ripped two singles at the top of the order, while Yanda, Davis and Ryan Vande Zande all finished with one hit each.
