Mobile home park near Ottumwa evacuated because of rising water from Des Moines River

AP
POSTED: July 5, 2010
OTTUMWA, Iowa (AP) — A mobile home park near Ottumwa has been evacuated because the Des Moines River is spilling out of its banks.

The Wapello County sheriff's office says the Valley Village Mobile Home Community is in a low-lying area less than a mile from the Ottumwa city limits.

The park's manager, Jane Moriarty, says most of the 300 residents who live there had left by noon. She says water was creeping into streets and yards by early afternoon.

The park flooded in 1993 and 2008.

In Ottumwa, officials say there is little chance of flooding from high river levels but they were installing pumps around town to prepare for flash flooding from heavy rains.
